“I think we use the word icon too loosely,” warns Jessica Paster who The Hollywood Reporter named one of 2013’s 25 Most Powerful Stylists in Hollywood. But she counts Elizabeth Taylor as one of the rare women who truly qualifies along with Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner and Katherine Hepburn.
“I think that the women of now and stylists of now, we always go back to these icons to get inspired,” says Paster. “When you think of Elizabeth Taylor you think of her violet eyes, her flawless complexion, the contrast of her dark hair and you can’t stop thinking of that waspy waist. No one looked more beautiful in 50s attire than she, and as far as I’m concerned no one else ever will. I’ll always think of her as Maggie The Cat, in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.”
As stylist to stars like Emily Blunt, Carla Gugino, Miranda Kerr and Abbie Cornish, Paster often tries to embody the spirit of Ms. Taylor, particularly with Gugino and Blunt. “There was an elegance to everything she wore, with a bit of naughtiness,” she says.
We asked this A-list stylist and Elizabeth Taylor fan a few ways YOU can get the look:
The Skin: For starters, stay out of the sun so you can have that beautiful complexion.
The Make-Up: Make sure you fill in the arched, thick eyebrows and a red lip is beautiful.
The Silhouette: Find dress silhouettes that accentuate the waist and show the beautiful décolletage.
The Jewels: One of my most special memories was visiting Elizabeth Taylor at her home to see her jewels. It was magical. Don’t ever be afraid of jewelry. Put a beautiful earring, a necklace, gorgeous bracelets and rings.
The Fur: And I know this one gets a little tricky, but a fur stole always made a woman elegant.
