Christian Dior Scarf

During designer Marc Bohan’s tenure with Christian Dior London, he developed a strong working and personal relationship with Elizabeth, for whom he designed this bespoke coral and white silk Christian Dior scarf. Presented to Elizabeth in the 1960s, the scarf features a purposefully frayed trim that includes text reading “Pour Mrs. Richard Burton” and “Christian Dior.” What makes the scarf especially unique is the colorization process, where pen engraving is painstakingly transposed onto the fabric. The lengthy and delicate process of creating the personalized greeting speaks volumes of Bohan’s eye for detail and reverence for Elizabeth.
In a rare 2007 interview, Marc Bohan was asked about his professional relationship with Elizabeth Taylor. “I loved dressing Liz,” said Bohan. On one occasion, Bohan remembered being summoned by Taylor to London, where she was working on a film with husband, Richard Burton. “They were waiting for me in Pinewood Studios”, related Bohan. “It was their wedding anniversary and they invited me to luncheon. They were divine. They both had the most fabulous sense of humor. I was in heaven. They were fantastic together — and so much in love. I’ve never seen a couple like that. It’s easy to understand that they got married twice. Their relationship was electric.”
