Yellow Wedding Gown by Irene Sharaff & Vittorio Nino Novarese

Cleopatra costume designer Irene Sharaff designed Elizabeth Taylor's now iconic yellow wedding gown for her first wedding to Richard Burton, which took place in Montreal on March 15th, 1964. Crafted by Vittorio Nino Novarese, the marigold chiffon knee-length babydoll dress with an empire waist echoed an iconic costume that Sharaff had sketched and designed for Elizabeth to wear in Cleopatra a year prior. On the day of the wedding, a coiffured braided updo woven with hyacinths and lilies of the valley and styled by Alexandre of Paris, combined with a modest and traditional bridal bouquet of yellow flowers and a diamond and emerald Bulgari brooch from Burton rounded out Elizabeth’s nuptial look.
