New Year, New Me: How Elizabeth Taylor Managed to Reinvent Herself Time & Time Again

She called it the business of living.

Change is inevitable, and in this so-called business of life, the new year presents tremendous opportunity. Not only does a new year mark a change in our calendars, but it is also a fresh start to be embraced. Within this freshness, there is great momentum to shift, to innovate, and to begin again.

2020 was a challenging year, to say the least. Many of the issues and events that dominated headlines in 2020 will carry into 2021, and with time, the ways we confront these challenges will hopefully lead to change. In these first few weeks of the new year, now is the time to harness the power of positivity and optimism as we look ahead to the next 12 months. The path forward holds beautiful promise, and we are reminded of this when we look at Elizabeth Taylor’s life.

It is easy to envision the future through glasses fogged up by fear and doubt, but it is simply more fun and liberating to wipe away the sludge and clear a path for reinvention. Elizabeth’s conviction made her excellent at this. Never one to shy away from change, if that’s what she wanted, she was the queen of reinvention. She was the icon for modifying a scenario she did not like, the model for trying it out one way, and if that didn’t work, then changing her hair and trying something else on. According to Elizabeth, moving forward in the business of living could be quite simple. As she once said, "pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick and pull yourself together."

In her 79 years, the spectrum of change ran far and wide, from lucky to tragic. She experienced darkness, but also the enchanting limelight. She was surrounded by love, beautiful things, glory, glitz and glamour, but she also suffered through physically abusive relationships, alcoholism, drug addiction, premature losses, and weight issues.

Beneath the Buglari was a real woman who endured the everyday struggles that come with this business of living. Career, relationships, health, and more, Elizabeth met her battles with fortitude. She harnessed her courage, confidence, and conviction to overcome and transcend the hardships that life threw her way.

One of the many gifts Elizabeth left us is an example of hope for when we feel stuck and weighed down. We can reflect back on the unique rollercoaster that was her life and see that she embraced the ride with a positive and accepting approach. She chose to live each day with purpose, intention, and love, through every high and every low, and she did it with a style and grace that became her trademark.

House of Taylor would like to wish you a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2021.
