Celebrate Sexual Health Awareness Month and Elizabeth Taylor’s Lasting Impact on AIDS Advocacy
September marks Sexual Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to promoting education, prevention, and open conversations about sexual health. This month also offers a moment to honor the tireless activism of Elizabeth Taylor, the first globally recognized celebrity HIV and AIDS activist, whose courage and determination reconfigured the world’s view of AIDS awareness and advocacy.
Elizabeth’s legacy as a passionate advocate for HIV and AIDS awareness began early, in 1985. At a time when misinformation, stigma, and fear led the conversation, she courageously used her platform to raise funds, influence policy, and bring the discourse about HIV and AIDS into the mainstream. Her work not only changed public perception but also directly supported those living with HIV and AIDS through the establishment of the Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) in 1985 and The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation (ETAF) in 1991. Her unwavering dedication set a precedent for celebrity activism, proving that fame could be a powerful force for change.
In honor of Elizabeth’s lasting commitment, ETAF is hosting the fifth annual Elizabeth Taylor Ball to End AIDS on September 26, 2024, at The Beverly Hills Hotel. With honorees Jennifer Hudson and Richard Dickson, and a performance by Natasha Bedingfield, we invite you to join us at this year’s ball as we support the foundation’s mission and spread the word about the importance of sexual health awareness.
